Tonga - Building an NDC Roadmap

Through the Partnership’s Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP), Tonga developed a nationally determined contribution (NDC) Roadmap and Investment Plan with a Project Pipeline to help reach the targets set out in the country’s second NDC. Support for the plan came from the Regional Pacific NDC Hub with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) as the implementing partner. The plan identifies 15 mitigation and adaptation opportunities, with mitigation projects in the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) and waste sectors and adaptation projects in the marine sector. The plan is also designed to attract and mobilize financial support from donors and private investors to help fund the projects it details.

The projects identified in the plan have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over a million tCO2 by 2030, totaling a net reduction in GHG emissions in Tonga by 61%, relative to 2006 levels. The plan was finalized in 2021 and approved by the Cabinet of Tonga on 14 September 2022. It was officially launched by Hon. Samiu Kuita Vaipulu, the acting prime minister of Tonga, during Tonga National Climate Change Awareness Week on 23 September 2022.
